The Department of Energy (DOE) started an investigation Tuesday on a mudslide incident at Semirara Mining and Power Corporation’s (SMPC) facility in Caluya, Antique.
Through its Energy Resource Development Bureau, the DOE deployed a team of geologists and mining engineers to conduct onsite assessment.
“We are thoroughly investigating the matter to determine the cause of the incident, and ensure that all safety standards and protocols were strictly upheld,” Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi said.
“The DOE is sending its heartfelt prayers to all who were affected by the incident. And the SMPC has assured us of their full cooperation as we carefully look into the matter.”
At about 1 a.m. on Tuesday, regular mining operations on a drainage canal using heavy machinery at the Molave Pit were halted when a mudslide occurred. One miner was reported missing.
On May 2018, a Semirara employee died after a landslide at the same Molave Pit.
The Molave Pit is one of two operating mines on the island, the other being Narra Pit.
From the two pits, about 70 percent of SMPC’s production are sourced for local demand.
